Why I Named My Blog “Sailing Yacht Stew”
Naming a blog might seem like the easiest task in the world. You know, just slap a catchy name on it, and boom—you’re a blogger! But for me, it wasn’t just about coming up with something that rolls off the tongue. I wanted the name to capture the essence of what I love most about yachting, and why I’m so passionate about my work. Enter “Sailing Yacht Stew.”
Let me break it down for you.
First off, “Stew” is short for stewardess, but if you’re in the yachting community, you already knew that. It’s a bit of a badge of honor, really. A yacht stewardess does so much more than serve drinks with a smile. We’re caretakers, organizers, event planners, and sometimes therapists (seriously, ask me about the conversations I’ve had at 2 a.m. over cocktails). I wanted my blog to represent the role that’s so central to my life and my passion for creating those small, yet unforgettable moments of luxury and relaxation onboard.
And then there’s “Sailing Yacht.” Now, don’t get me wrong—I love all aspects of yachting, from the sleek motor yachts cutting through the water to the high-energy beach barbecues with mojitos in hand. But there’s something undeniably beautiful about sailing. The moment you turn off the engine, feel the wind catch the sails, and let nature take over, it’s like stepping into another world. It’s slower, more deliberate, and incredibly calming.
Funny enough, it’s our 18-foot sailboat dinghy that draws all the attention, not the yacht! People out on the water will compliment each other’s boats, and I swear, no matter where we go, it’s our little sailboat that steals the show. In the world of yachting, you’re either a motor yacht person or a sailboat person, and I guess we’re a bit of a hybrid crew. It’s pretty nostalgic, being part of the sailboat crowd, and I love how it brings people together in this quiet, knowing way that only those who have felt the wind in their sails can understand.
Sailing is also one of my boss’s favorite hobbies, which suits me perfectly. He swears it’s the best remedy for his back problems—and honestly, I can’t argue. With my massage therapy background, I get it. The subtle, rhythmic movements of the boat when the sails are up and the engine is off—it’s like the ocean is giving you a slow, soothing massage. There’s nothing quite like it. It’s one of the most peaceful experiences I’ve had working in yachting, and I think that’s why it resonates with me on such a personal level.
Beyond the luxury and opulence that often defines yachting, there’s this quieter, more eco-friendly side of the industry that I’m proud to be part of. We’re moving towards greener, more sustainable activities like sailing, and that aligns with my values on and off the water. Sailing is an amazing way to experience the beauty of the world in a way that’s kinder to the planet. Plus, there’s something incredibly satisfying about working with the wind, relying on nature to guide you, and realizing that sometimes, the best moments come when you let go of control.
So, why “Sailing Yacht Stew”? Because it reflects everything I love about how this industry is involving—the beauty, the luxury, the eco-friendly adventures, and, of course, the personal joy I find in being a stewardess, making life on the water something truly special for my guests and myself.
