CULTURE OF LOCATION
Ah, Mallorca, or “Majorca” as some like to call it. This Mediterranean gem is like a dream for any yachtie! Nestled about 60 miles off Spain’s coast, it’s the largest of the Balearic Islands, and wow, what a mix of history, charm, and that coastal vibe we all love. The island has such a unique rhythm – from the bustling energy of Palma’s cosmopolitan scene to the serene, laid-back coves scattered along the coastline. The yachting industry here is huge, and let me tell you, it’s not just the beauty of the azure waters that draws us back year after year – it’s the blend of luxury, adventure, and endless opportunities. If you’re like me and spend a good chunk of time around yachts, you’ll notice how the island practically breathes yachting culture! It’s a hub for everything from brokerage to maintenance – keeping those beauties shipshape for when the sun calls.
SAILING SCHOOLS
Mallorca is a dream for aspiring crew (especially an easier place to start for non-Americans), and trust me, you won’t run out of training options. If you’re new to the industry or looking to sharpen your skills, places like Aigua Sea School, Deep Blue Sea Training, and Palma Sea School are where you want to be. They’re all RYA-certified, so you know you’re getting top-notch training. Plus, they offer courses beyond the basics (STCW anyone?), which is perfect if you’re looking to stand out. Bluewater Yachting School is another gem! These schools are practically a rite of passage for anyone stepping into the world of yachting here.
PLACES TO STAY
Lodging:
If you’re a crew member passing through Palma, you’ve got a few trusty options. The Boat House is a personal favorite – it’s got that casual, homey feel, and with its central location, it’s super convenient for those last-minute job opportunities. Plus, they post residents’ CVs on their website, which is a bonus if you’re looking for work. Then there’s Hostel Apuntadores – it’s not fancy, but it’s clean and friendly, with amenities like laundry (always a lifesaver) and Wi-Fi. It’s also a great place to meet fellow yachties. For budget travelers, Hotel Colon is the go-to spot. It’s close to the action, and while it’s simple, it’s got everything you need to rest up before your next adventure.

FOOD, RESTAURANTS, AND PROVISIONS
Now, when it comes to food, Mallorca’s got it all. Hogan’s Bar is like a second home for many yachties. Imagine grabbing a pint, digging into a juicy burger, and watching some live music after a long day on the water – bliss! It’s been around since 1996, and it’s still the place to go if you’re after that hearty meal with a view of the marina. Then there’s The Corner Bar – a yacht crew institution. It’s where stories of epic sails and the occasional job lead are exchanged over cocktails. Whether you’re after wings, burgers, or just a cold beer, this spot never disappoints. Don’t forget to pop in for a night of laughter and camaraderie!

WELLNESS, SPAS, AND THINGS TO DO
When it’s time to unwind, Mallorca has no shortage of luxury spas. After a hectic charter season, treating yourself to a day at Puro Hotel’s Urban Spa is a must. I can’t get enough of the steam room and saunas. If you’ve got more time, Hotel Castillo Son Vida is a spa lover’s paradise, with state-of-the-art treatment rooms and a Technogym fitness area for when you want to sweat off those post-charter snacks. But the real treat? The Arabella Spa at St. Regis Maradavall Hotel. I once had a shiatsu massage there, and let me tell you, I walked out feeling like a new woman! The mix of Western and Eastern treatments is just divine. For something a little more grounded, the Hotel Sa Torre offers a unique experience with natural products from their own garden – it’s pure zen.

TRANSPORTATION, SAFETY, AND TRAVEL
One of my favorite things about Palma is how easy it is to get around! The old town is perfect for wandering on foot, and the cycling paths along the seafront are a dream – especially on a sunny day. Of course, taxis and buses are always an option if you’re feeling less adventurous. But one of the best ways to explore the island is by renting a car and hitting the open road. You’ll discover hidden beaches, charming villages, and those epic mountain views! Palma’s airport is also super convenient, with tons of flights connecting you to the rest of Europe in no time.
CREW AGENCIES
If you’re like me and have done your fair share of dock-walking with a pile of CVs, you’ll know that agencies can save you a ton of time and hassle. In Palma, agencies like ACREW, The Crew Network, and EL Crew Co are well-known for helping crew land those dream jobs. Whether you’re a greenie looking for your first break or a seasoned pro searching for the perfect fit, these agencies are your best friends. They work closely with yacht owners and captains, so getting on their radar is a great way to find a gig fast!
